The Data Matrix code is a well-known 2D barcode. It has been developed in the late nineteen eighties in the USA by the Acuity Corp.
The Data Matrix code is built as a square barcode, consisting of four or five components:
The Finder Pattern is built by two dotted or solid line pairs which form a square.
The Quiet Zone surrounds the Finder Pattern with at least a width and height of one module. It doesn't contain any data but separates the barcode from its environment.
The Open Corner opposite to the solid corner which is built by the solid line pair of the Finder Pattern. It allows to quickly recognize the code scheme. Code scheme ECC 200 with an even number of columns and rows always shows a white Open Corner. All other normed schemes with odd numbers of columns and rows show a black Open Corner.
The Alignment Pattern is used for better recognition in larger barcodes. It is built by a paired combination of solid and dotted lines in both vertical and horizontal direction. It divides barcodes with a width/height of at least 32 modules into parts of the same size.
The Data Area contains the relevant binary coded data. The amount of information depends on the size of the barcode.
