Global Trade Item Number) is the current identifier for the former EAN (
European Article Number), which was used until 2009.
The GTIN-13 code can be found on almost every article of everyday neccessities. The GTIN-13 code has 13 cyphers with the 13th cypher being a checksum cypher which is calculated automatically.
The GTIN-13 code is built as follows:
The first two places build the country prefix. Code numbers 40–43 e.g. stand for a code source in Germany.
The following five cyphers encode the producer of the product. This number is franchised for German producers by GS1 Germany GmbH (http://www.gs1-germany.de/).
The next five cyphers are the underlying article number and are defined by the producer of this article.
The last place is the check digit.
In combination with the GTIN-13 barcode, an EAN 2 or EAN 5 barcode can also be used as additional barcode (Add-on).
